It's not only during Halloween that children and adults like to dress up, although it may be a little extra poppis then - you can have masquerade parties all year round. Great fun, of course, that the children get to turn into their idols or favorite characters, but it can also be felt in the wallet and mean another stressful moment when you go out on the town in a hurry and find the "right costume". So, why not try making fancy dress for kids on your own? It does not have to be that difficult. Here you will find a couple of simple costume ideas that you can easily put together yourself!

What do you have at home?

A prerequisite for the creation to be cheap and simple is that you start from what you actually have at home. So that at best you do not have to buy anything at all, except possibly a small detail. Check in closets and cabinets, and do not forget to check in the kitchen drawers, where you can find a lot of useful stuff you did not even know you had!

Extra good stuff is:

  • sheets, tablecloths - fabric at all
  • hats
  • makeup
  • outgrown clothes
  • watercolor
  • buttons
  • cartons and corrugated cardboard
  • felt-tip pens.

There are probably few people who have all these things lying around at home just like that, but you will go a long way in having some of them!

Do it together & keep it simple

Some are very good at doing things and can make masterpieces out of nothing, some are good at
other things. Do not take in too much, but try to keep it simple. Let your child be involved from the beginning and come up with ideas and thoughts about the costume. It can usually be a very nice experience for everyone involved and it is much easier to reach an estimated end result if you have the same starting point. Also remember to start well in advance, so you do not have to stress, and maybe even have time to start over from the beginning if something goes wrong. Smart huh?If you are not a direct craftsman, then invest more in creating a cool make-up, you will go a long way in that!

Masquerade costumes for children - 6 simple costume ideas

GhostThis is probably the simplest masquerade costume - it basically only requires a sheet and some watercolor! Look for a sheet you can sacrifice, and cut holes for the eyes and paint with black paint around the holes. If you want to invest a little extra in face painting, it can be a fun idea to let the sheet hang from the shoulders and down, and instead make up the child's face like a skull. You will find an inspiration picture a little further down.ThiefThis costume is also very easy to achieve with things you have in your own wardrobe. You will go a long way with a striped sweater, torn / dirty trousers, and a hat / robber hat. Can you find a sack or bag to fill with "money"? The top!Tip! Cut off the foot of a pair of transparent tights, this will be a fun robber hat that the child can wear over his head.PirateHere it is required that you are prepared to sacrifice a pair of clothes - a pirate has everything from whole and clean clothes ... Do you find any clothes you can spare? Then just get started! Make a few holes in a sweater and a pair of pants, soak clothes and face with watercolor. Make-up, if necessary, black around the eyes. Maybe you will find an old snus handkerchief that is good to have in your hair?Tip! Make an eye patch of a pair of black socks and some thread.ClownThis costume is mostly about the make-up. Find an inspiration image to start from - a clown can look in many different ways. If you dare, it can be fun to dye your hair in a fun color - a good tip is to paint with regular watercolor! Combine different colors and patterns on clothes. Maybe you can even find a fun hat?PippiThat many children love Pippi is no secret, is your child one of them? Then just look for red watercolor and a little mismatched clothing. Paint the hair red with the watercolor and use steel wire and tiara to make the braids stand straight out. When it comes to make-up, it is enough to make up rosy cheeks and a little freckles - DONE!AnimalDoes your child have a favorite animal? How nice! Then just find clothes that have the right color and you can put extra weight on the make-up (if you want). See example image above. Find an inspiration image to start from, so that you and the child have the same expectations of the result. If the animal has horns or ears, you can cut out shapes from paper or cardboard and attach them to a tiara or with the help of steel wire. If the animal has a tail, you can use fabric and fasten it with the strings around the baby's waist. These are tips that do not involve several hours of hassle and chores. However, if you would like to invest a little more in costume creation, and own a sewing machine, you will find costumes you can easily make at home here. And at cchobby.se you will find instructions on how to create simple fancy dress for children.

The secret to successful masquerade costumes for children It may sound cliché, but a happy child is the most important ingredient for a successful outfit. So make sure that you have a clear idea of what the child's expectations are, and that these are at a reasonable level. If they do not, try to lower them before starting the project to avoid unnecessary disappointment. No matter what you come to the conclusion that the child should dress up, a hot tip is to find one or a couple of inspirational images that you can use as a target image. In this way, you have the same vision and can be helped to get there.

Think of:
  • find reasonable inspirational images
  • start well in advance
  • sample makeup before
  • less is more.

A good idea to have with you is also that the more the child can actually help himself, the more important the end result. That is: a five-year-old probably does not have at all the same requirements for the suit as an eleven-year-old has - adapt your own expectations according to the child. Surely it's more fun to have made a decent masquerade costume with your child than a super-advanced one that the child has not been involved in creating at all?Is it your child who fills and should have a mask? How fun! Here you will find the best tips on how to make the party something fun for both you and the kids!
